Why do people need orthodontic treatment?

The most common reasons for people needing orthodontic treatment are concerns such as misaligned jaws or teeth – such as an overbite, under bite or open bite – crowded, crooked or protruding teeth, or large gaps between teeth.

All people who seek orthodontic treatment want a beautiful smile and the confidence boost this can give. But there are also other important reasons: Having a good bite and straight teeth reduces wear on your teeth, which helps them to stay in better condition and last longer. Being able to chew your food better can benefit digestion and nutrition for greater wellbeing.

Cleaning your teeth and gums well to prevent decay and gum disease is easier with straight teeth than with crooked ones. Research has shown that people who have received orthodontic treatment generally have better oral health throughout life.
